Hey there! It’s Charlie O’Shields, back with another episode of Sketching Stuff! I’ve been sketching and writing every day now for over five years. What I’ve found is that I very often forget things that I’ve sketched and things that I’ve written about until I see them again. It’s fun to revisit older illustrations and stories, and see how my approach has changed over the years. Oh, it’s still a sketch and a ramble, but there’s always something a bit different on my mind each time I make something. It’s perhaps nothing terribly grand or profound, but it’s all part of this journey we call art.

I’ve always tried to encourage others to create art each and every day. I truly believe it’s one of the most rewarding things we could ever do for ourselves in life. And no matter what type of arts and crafts you prefer, doing a little each and every day makes amazing things happen. For me, it’s given me the confidence today to branch out and create more narrative sketches, many times completely from my own imagination. The very idea that I would ever be able to sketch without a reference in front of me seemed impossible when I started. But today, after dutifully sketching stuff for these past few years, I can DO more than I ever thought I could. And, all of the credit goes to my lovely daily art habit.

  1. What a great idea…to “open more windows”. And I think looking to the past as in your podcast on nostalgia also can open up more windows. Very interesting segue. 😉 Great podcast!

  2. Wow, you talk fast! 😃 I loved this podcast. Your section on scribbling flowers had me laughing over and over! Looking forward to opening the window and letting the fresh air in with your podcast on a regular basis. Thanks!

    1. So happy you enjoyed the podcast! 😃💕 Hope I wasn’t talking too fast! hehe Early on I was told I was talking too slowly. Glad I gave you a good laugh!

  3. Came across doodlewaah for the first time and randomly listened to your podcast. You write beautifully! I am still struggling with writing and painting daily. Any tips? I start but unable to sustain it.

    1. Aww thanks so much, Suruchi! I’m so happy you enjoyed the podcast! 😃💕 Daily writing and painting is mostly about just trying to do a little each day until a habit is formed. Try just 15 minutes a day and make something without worrying about the result. Just enjoy the DOing of it! You’ll quickly find you can’t stop at 15 minutes and focus on the enjoyment, not the output. I did this and soon learned that there is far more time in the day to create than you ever thought possible! 😉

      1. I think I’ve found a fun place to listen and learn. Forward March!!

I will start the 15 min daily creativity
Rather than beginning a masterpiece! Maybe baby steps will form a real habit for me. I do journal daily, have found that to be fun and memory shaking!

        1. Yay! I’m so thrilled to hear that, Mary! Glad you enjoyed the podcast. And yes to just 15 minutes a day… it makes all the difference in the world even though it seems like a short amount of time. That’s what I committed to doing at first, and not much has changed… hehe… I often sketch much more, but if I’m rushed for time, I can always find those 15 wonderful minutes to create! Happy Creating!
