Hello my friends! It’s Charlie O’Shields, back with another episode of Sketching Stuff! Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve loved reading and escaping into the pages of a book. And, yep, I still love books with pictures as well. Whether visual or written, stories are a wonderfully creative way to communicate ideas. I tend to tell personal stories, but I also enjoy wildly fantastic stories that could only come from imagination.

And when it comes to art, storytelling is a very important skill to develop. Each line, shape, and color is a cast member that plays an important role in the things we sketch and paint. Yet, in the end, it’s an ensemble cast of characters that come together to create the final tale. Sketchbooks, when filled, become a bit like storybooks.  Granted, the visuals may seem a bit random, depending on what we were studying at the time, but story is still there. It’s the story of our art journey itself. I pair my own sketches with written stories each and every day, so here’s a little collection celebrating those storybook memories.

  1. Another fantastic podcast! By the way, I’m a snake according to the Chinese horoscope and I’d much rather be a pig. I like pigs, but snakes … *shudders*

    1. Thanks, Sandra! 😃💕 Thrilled you enjoyed this one! hehe…. a snake sounds rather cool actually. I think though that means we’re the least compatible, proving you should never believe everything you read! 😉

  2. Hi Charlie..! It’s the first time I’m listening to you, and I’m so thankful and thrilled to have found you. I have travelled and glided along every line and curve and I am so astonished to find your way of telling things so familiar to me..!! I feel as if there is someone who can actually read “me” aloud, Is simply amazing and I loved listening to your racconto.. And I also want to thank you for defying us to do some art every day. I know how much I need it, but still have to master the strength to accomplish it. Recently I bought some lovely stuff to encourage myself to get hands to work, but is very little what I did yet… Yeah I work long hours, that’s true, but this is exactly the oxygen that I need to breathe..!! So I will return for your help on this…Thank you so much again..! : ) Edith

    1. Aww thanks so much, Edith for the wonderful comment! 😃💕I’m so thrilled you found Sketching Stuff and are enjoying the podcast. Yes, and more yes to everything you said. We CAN all make a little art each day… it’s just like oxygen. And I, for one, just sort of make it… without worrying over expectations and trying to achieve so crazy level of mastery. That comes with practice, and that’s where the daily thing comes in again. Just make, be happy, and make some more! ❤️
