February is the month of Valentine’s Day and stores are often filled with lots of little treats, so I thought I’d dedicate an episode to all things sweet. In truth, I just love sketching and well, eating, desserts so I have quite a few stories that they’ve inspired. As ever, these aren’t really stories about the desserts themselves so much as an exploration of all of the best things life has to offer.

I’m often guilty of rushing around and worrying about getting everything done. It’s tough sometimes to settle down for a moment and enjoy a little down time or a treat of some kind. And to remind myself to treat my friends as well, because that’s really one of the most enjoyable things one can do. And certainly taking a little time to paint and sketch each day is also one of the life’s greatest little pleasures. So, I hope you’ll grab a pen, pencil or paintbrush and sketch with me as we go on a little journey together, enjoying the sweetest things.

  1. I truly believe that cupcakes will rise to flavor … er … favor again! It’s impossible to keep a good cupcake down … well, I guess, actually, it is easy to down a good cupcake. Oh my goodness, this was such a sweet post, I think I’ve gained a couple of pounds listening to it!

    1. hehe! Thanks, Sandra! 😃💕 Thrilled you enjoyed it! I figured my dessert posts deserved a little podcast episode. And yes, I think cupcakes will definitely rise again. And I’ll be there waiting to each every one! lol

    1. Thanks so much!! 😃💕 I’m so thrilled you enjoyed the podcast! Hope you’ll check out the other episodes as well. And calories is a very dirty word isn’t it? haha! Especially when it comes to desserts!

  2. love your pod past and yes you are an expert after you trip in France and the amount of sugar you had . I like puddings with a lot of fruit in them with double cream . Cup cakes we in England some times have them with no wings . Just a lovely cake. Yes we told you so . your pictures are lovely as ever .

    1. Thanks so much, Les! Glad you’re enjoying the podcast! 😃💕 Yeah, thankfully they don’t put the same amount of sugar in desserts in France as they do in the United States or I would have been in a sugar coma for sure! lol And yay to any lovely cake, but I adored the fact that English cupcakes sometimes have wings. That’s just really cool! hehe

    1. Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the book, Les! 🙂 hehe… yeah, my mother laughed when she read that part. And confirmed was true… she said that all the time, but was indeed usually joking!

  3. you are not sorry. you are a sadist and do this on purpose to torture me. This one is a direct hit and I will hold it against you permanently. Thank goodness you didn’t mention donuts. oye. or St honore. aghh, or flourless chocolate cake. sigh….

    1. hahaha! I was wondering if you’d see this episode scroll by, Suzala! So sorry for the sweet torture my friend! 😃💕 But, in truth, I think I’m more of a masochist as I continue to sketch desserts I never get to eat. The agony!! lol

  4. Yes, we used to make butterfly cakes (those winged ones) in England but alas we have been taken over by American traditions again and cupcakes are all the rage now! I enjoyed your podcast but not as much as your sketches, which are inspirational to me Charlie.

    1. Thanks so much, Eve! 😃💕Aww those darn Americans… hehe… I think fairy cakes sound so cool! And glad you enjoyed the podcast and thrilled you find my sketches inspirational. That’s such a lovely thing to hear! 😊

  5. Oh my my do I love bakeries and almost everything in them.
This is my first time listening to your post. A friend send me your newsletter and I have enjoy your storytelling so much. You are a storyteller but my my your drawing are excellent. Went I grow up I want to draw like you. Am working on it practice practice practice. Thanks

    1. Aww that’s awesome! I’m so thrilled you enjoyed the podcast and my stories and illustrations! Thanks for letting me know! 😃💕And my secret is that I just never grow up at all… it makes sketching so much easier and less stressful! lol But yep… I’ve been doing it daily for 3 and half years now, so practice is definitely the key. I hope you’ll also share what you make in our community on Doodlewash – https://doodlewash.com/community/ – would love to see it! (it’s totally free by way… hehe… just a fun place for artist to post without pressure).

  6. Well Charlie, I have to agree with the other posts for your sweet things … you are cruel and I’ve gained five pounds just looking at the wonderful doodle washes! I love your style of drawing and painting as much as I love the stories that go with it. I’m only a couple years older than you, but, my memories are all locked away somewhere in my mind. The chocolate covered cherry is a fresh memory though and one I like to indulge in frequently. Whipped cream is delicious but I’ve also taken to eating coconut milk straight out of the can (not the kind you can buy to drink but the very think one used for … anything) as a substitute. Perhaps this seems less sinful that whipped cream? Though you can certainly whip it also! Thanks for all the tasty thoughts! Cheers.

    1. Aww thanks so much, Robin! 😃💕 And sorry for those extra calories I inspired! Okay, I’m not too sorry… extra treats are wonderful! lol Yeah, that’s a bit less sinful than whipped cream indeed! I figure anything that makes us smile is worth it in moderation!
