I’ve always loved all sorts of animals and insects ever since I was a little kid. Getting to sketch them as an adult makes me feel like a kid all over again. During my art journey of daily writing and sketching, I haven’t sketched many humans, but I have quite a collection of other living creatures. Nature is odd and wonderful, full of mysteries and often wild and unexpected things.

Many times, when I choose to sketch something from nature, I hop online to discover more about it. This has led to lots of random trivia that I’ve collected along the way, so I figured I’d share some of that with you here. As many of you know, I sketch to not only capture life, but to learn a bit more about it along the way. And the natural world is so fascinating and interesting to me, especially the oddest little bits that make my inner child giggle.

While merely looking at nature certainly has much to inspire an artist, each living creature also has its own history. Beyond the lines, contours, and shapes there’s a story there as well. Sometimes, I find myself fascinated with fun facts about a particular creature and sometimes it makes me think of something else entirely. This, to me, is what makes daily sketching so much fun! So, join me now, for perhaps the oddest journey yet, as we explore some curious bits of our naturally fun world!

  1. I can see why people are fascinated with insects! I’m not – I’m too horrified, but I still appreciate the complexity and beauty of them. They just need to be complex and beautiful far away from me! Another great podcast, Charlie. Thank you for a fun listen.

    1. Thanks, Sandra! 😃💕 Glad you enjoyed this one! It was admittedly odder than most… hehe… And I have to admit that I’ll always look at a praying mantis a bit differently now. 😳lol
